When Dan Abrell, set out to invent the Drink Perfector to bring beverages to their optimal and flavorful temperature, he used his expertise steeped in the metal industry. “Copper is the best metal to control temperature transfer,” he said. “And, bacteria cannot grow on copper, which makes it a safe and clean choice. I also realized that if I could take that too-hot or too-cold beverage and pass it through a copper tube, I could regulate the temperature by using ice or warm water.”
In her recent article, VICE Senior Staff Writer of Science, Shayla Love writes about how copper can destroy the norovirus, MRSA, virulent strains of E. coli, and coronaviruses—including the novel strain currently causing the COVID-19 pandemic.
“… copper is able to destroy the microbes that most threaten our lives. It has been shown to kill a long list of microbes, including norovirus, MRSA, a staph bacteria that has become resistant to antibiotics, virulent strains of E. coli that cause food-borne illness, and coronaviruses—possibly including the novel strain currently causing the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Consisting of a tough clear polymer carafe and a copper coil within, you can add ice or warm water to the Drink Perfector, depending upon your goal to increase or decrease the temperature of your beverage. You can also use it as is, and the room temp of the copper will regulate the beverage temperature 10-15 degrees. Pour your beverage in the top reservoir and let it percolate down through the coil into your cup or glass. Within 20 seconds, your drink is ready for enjoyment. There is no guesswork, and within seconds the temperature reaches its range of flavorful best.
The Drink Perfector sounds high tech, but it’s actually as old as the hills—literally! The Perfector’s secret is its copper coil. Copper has been around since the Earth was formed. It’s an element. It’s pure. It’s simple.
And, it’s Perfection.
"On copper surfaces, bacteria and viruses die. When a microbe lands on a copper surface, the copper releases ions, which are electrically charged particles. Those copper ions blast through the outer membranes and destroy the whole cell, including the DNA or RNA inside. Because their DNA and RNA are destroyed, it also means a bacteria or virus can’t mutate and become resistant to the copper, or pass on genes (like for antibiotic resistance) to other microbes.”

Abrell’s research led to the realization that wine enthusiasts especially like the Drink Perfector, as enjoying wine at its right temperature takes some effort and guesswork. The red vintages are usually uncorked at room temperatures, and the white after refrigeration. The Drink Perfector brings them to the recommended temperatures: 60-65 degrees for reds (using ice brings it down from room temp of 70) and 50-55 for whites. “If refrigerated already then no ice is needed,” Abrell said. “Just run the wine through the device to increase the refrigerator temperature. It also aerates the wine for peak perfection!”
"If copper were more frequently used in hospitals, where 1 in 31 people get healthcare-acquired infections, or in high-traffic areas, where many people touch surfaces teeming with microbial life-it could play an invaluable role in public health, said Michael Schmidt, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the Medical University of South Carolina, who studies copper. And yet, it is woefully absent from our public spaces, healthcare settings, and homes.”

Chip Gregory, Communications Manager for Drink Perfection says, “this is why the Drink Perfector is perfect for hospitals. Not only can they stop burning the mouths of patients with the extremely hot coffee and tea that they serve, but also be rest assured that the Perfector is easy to clean and is made with the microbe killing copper. "
In a recent study published in the International Journal of Cancer found that those who drink beverages at temperatures hotter than 140 degrees Fahrenheit have a higher risk for esophageal cancer. “Drink Perfector eliminates this health risk and brings back the joy of drinking you hot beverages,” he said.
The Drink Perfector has been feature on CBS Chicago morning show and in the Tea House Times
Magazine.
